Centro de la Imagen
Founded in 1994 by the National Council for Culture and the Arts (Conaculta) for the purpose of reinforcing its programs in the field of photography, the Centro de la Imagen is a space dedicated to research, learning and promotion of this medium to make it available to different audiences. In 2001, Centro de la Imagen was incorporated into the National Center for the Arts (Cenart), located in Plaza de la Ciudadela in downtown Mexico City. It has developed its activities according to an interdisciplinary model that consists of four programs – Editorial, Educational, Research and Museology – as well as two special projects, the Biennial of Photography and the Festival Fotoseptiembre.
These programs and special projects have already established a system from which photography can be understood as an open cultural field that is closely related to art, communication, technology and history, as well as film and video. All of these disciplines and related media have supported what Centro de la Imagen produces: curatorial work, book publishing, workshops, archive services, seminars and forums for academic exchange on critical analysis.
